A system of 55 caves near San Cristóbal holds the largest concentration of prehistoric art in the Caribbean: more than 6,000 pictographs and hundreds of petroglyphs made by the Taíno and earlier islanders. Birds, humans and mythological beings crowd the walls, though nearby quarrying has long threatened the site.
