On the Hokkaidō coast near Yoichi, Fugoppe Cave was discovered by a student in 1950 and found to be covered with hundreds of engravings. Winged and horned anthropomorphic figures and abstract signs, cut by Epi-Jōmon people, make it one of only two known engraved caves in Japan; it is preserved inside a climate-controlled hall.
